What Is Chin Surgery?

"Chin surgery" refers to any surgical cosmetic enhancement of the chin. The most common procedure is to place a chin implant to increase the projection or definition of the chin. Some patients benefit from reducing the size of the chin or making changes to its shape.

Chin surgery can be performed on its own, but it's also a common companion to rhinoplasty or facelift surgery for an allover improvement. Dr. Tierney discusses his recommended course of action with each patient during his or her consultation.

Your Chin Surgery

At Dr. Tierney's Nashville practice, chin surgery is an outpatient procedure, which means patients may return home the same day as the surgery. Depending on the specifics of the surgery, Dr. Tierney may recommend general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. He discusses his planned technique with each patient prior to his or her surgery.

Once the patient is fully anesthetized, Dr. Tierney makes the incision. Incision placement is dependent on the type of surgery performed – for example, chin implant surgery usually requires an incision inside the mouth. Once he has made the incision, Dr. Tierney either places an implant, advances the bone forward, or reshapes it using a specialized tool. When he is satisfied with the new size and shape of the chin, Dr. Tierney closes the incision.

Chin Surgery Recovery & Results

Recovery following chin surgery is not particularly involved, and most patients can return to work within a week. Dr. Tierney advises patients to keep their heads upright and elevated to minimize swelling for the first few days. Bruising and swelling are common, and some patients report numbness and tingling in the area. A liquid diet may be recommended for the first several days, with patients gradually working up to solid foods as they become more comfortable.

Barring future trauma to the chin, the results of chin surgery are generally permanent. Patients find that their improved facial contours contribute to lifelong feelings of confidence and self-esteem.
