Ask the Plastic Surgeon: 5 Questions About ‘Gummy Bear’ Breast Implants

Have you heard of “gummy bear” breast implants? Many women interested in breast augmentation have. Both here at my practice in Nashville, TN and online, women have a lot of questions about these innovative silicone implants.

A recent survey by the popular plastic surgery forum RealSelf showed that 70% of women knew the term “gummy bear” implants, but few knew what they are or what makes them different. So let’s look at some quick facts. Here are my answers to 5 common questions:

1. Why are they called that?

The nickname comes from the implants’ consistency. Gummy bear implants are made of a highly cohesive form of silicone. This means that the silicone holds its shape and doesn’t leak even if you cut it in 2, similar to a gummy bear candy.

2. What are the benefits of highly cohesive silicone?

Other than the fact that the silicone won’t leak in the rare case of a rupture, these implants are most popular because of their highly natural look and feel. Most women and surgeons agree gummy bear implants feel more like natural tissue than saline implants, which can sometimes feel a bit firm. Additionally, some research has shown these silicone implants have a reduced risk of certain rare complications, including capsular contracture and rippling.

3. What sizes and shapes do they come in?

Because gummy bear implants are considered “form-stable,” they are available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Many patients opt for round implants, which provide nice fullness in the top of the breasts, and others choose “anatomical” or “teardrop-shaped” implants, which mimic the natural slope of the breast. Both shapes come in a wide range of sizes.

4. How much do they cost?

Generally, highly cohesive silicone implants cost about the same as previous kinds of silicone implants. Both types cost more than saline implants. Prices for breast augmentation surgery include the implant cost, surgeon fees, and other costs, and these vary around the country. Breast augmentation costs are usually between $5,000 and $7,000 at my practice.

5. Am I a good candidate?

While many women are excellent candidates for gummy bear implants, it is always important to discuss your goals and expectations with a board-certified plastic surgeon before making a firm decision. I tell each of my patients that it is important to find the right implant for her based on her goals and her body.

Gummy bear implants give women yet another excellent option when considering breast augmentation. If you believe these implants may be the best choice for you, please contact us for a consultation.
